ポリ乳酸 (PLA) は、トウモロコシやキャッサバなどの再生可能な植物資源から抽出されたデンプンから作られる、新しいバイオベースの再生可能な生分解性素材です。
でんぷん原料を糖化してグルコースを得、そのグルコースと特定の菌株を発酵させて高純度の乳酸を生成し、化学合成により一定の分子量のポリ乳酸を得る重合連鎖は次のとおりです。

PLAは、21世紀において最も大きな発展の可能性を秘めた「グリーンプラスチック」です。優れた機械的特性と透明性を備えていますが、結晶化速度が遅い、耐熱性が低いなどの欠点があり、普及と使用が制限されています。したがって、性能を向上させるために何らかの強化方法がよく使用されますが、透明性や複雑なプロセスが犠牲になります。
